"World's Fair 2.0" reclaims the former site of the New York's World's Fairs to re-envision the concept of a "democracity" through the eyes of a new middle class emerging in the diverse neighborhoods of Queens. The term "democracity" was first used by the fair's public relations director, Edward Bernays, the godfather of advertising, to promote the initial 1939 fair as a vision of democracy delivered through these new consumer technologies. In posing the question of what a "democracity" would look like today or in the very near future, REV- partners with youth reporters from People's Production House to create a virtual "augmented-reality" vision of a 2012 World's Fair located on the former fairgrounds. The goal—a World's Fair created not by corporations or the government, but by the community of Queens. |
